When students, of all levels, master strategies like: previewing, writing guided questions, highlighting, text annotation, writing marginal notes, summarizing and using graphic organizers to increase critical thinking, they become strong and independent readers. These strategies help students to navigate rigorous, academic texts and increase metacognition awareness during the reading and writing process. In this session, participants will review relevant research, discuss how the above strategies enhance writing across content areas, and practice the strategies using texts from core disciplines, and be prepared to help teachers implement strategies in their lessons during the first week of class.
